How to Keep Your Plumbing System Running Smoothly During a Heatwave

Heatwaves in the UK are becoming more frequent, and while most people think about fans and sun cream, your plumbing system can also suffer in extreme temperatures. At Mark Hinton and Son Plumbing & Heating LTD, we’re here to help you protect your pipes, appliances, and water supply during the hot weather.

How to Protect Your Plumbing System During a Heatwave

1. Watch Out for Low Water Pressure

During a heatwave, demand on the mains water supply increases significantly- especially in the mornings and evenings. This can lead to low pressure in your taps or shower. Try using water at off-peak times and avoid overloading your system by running too many appliances at once.

2. Check for Leaks More Frequently

Hot weather can cause older pipes and fittings to expand and contract, leading to leaks. Inspect your taps, outdoor pipes, and any visible pipework for drips, damp patches, or mould. Catching a small leak early can prevent costly damage.

3. Be Mindful of Outdoor Taps and Hoses

Outdoor taps get more use in the summer—especially for watering the garden or filling paddling pools. Check that your outdoor tap is in good condition and that hose connections are tight to avoid wasting water or putting strain on the pipe.

4. Insulate Exposed Pipework

Most people associate pipe insulation with winter, but it’s just as important during extreme heat. Insulating exposed pipework, especially outdoors or in loft spaces, helps prevent cracking, leaks, and heat-related damage.

5. Don’t Ignore Your Boiler in Summer

Your boiler may be used less in the summer, but it still needs care. Heat can affect boiler components and pressure. Summer is the ideal time to book a service before autumn demand returns. A well-maintained boiler is more energy-efficient and reliable.

6. Use Water Wisely

To prevent overloading your local water network, be water-wise:

  • Turn taps off when brushing teeth

  • Use a watering can instead of a hose

  • Only run washing machines and dishwashers with full loads

These simple steps reduce pressure on your plumbing and help the environment too.
